Where to Paddle
I do not spend a lot of time looking around the DNR website, but maybe I should. There are all kinds of information beyond the Boating Laws which I do look at from time to time. I do read the Indiana DNR magazine Outdoor Indiana. An article in the September/October issue recommended the new interactive state map called “Where to Paddle”. Launched in June of this year, the site even includes USGS water gauges that display real-time streamflow at stations across the state. This map can be found at:
The DNR refers to rivers and streams with public access that are paddle-able for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and rafting as “water trails”. Their comprehensive water trails map combines information from multiple agencies and divisions, both federal and state. Included are:
- Public access sites
- The most up-to-date river miles
- Real-time river level gauges
- Low-head dams
- Watercraft rental locations
When you pull up the map:
- Click on a site in Indiana to view location details.
- Zoom in to see more features and areas.
- Drag the map in any direction to pan.
- You can view satellite imagery, streets, or topography
