What NOT to Put in Simonton Lake!
Things high in phosphorous like:
- Lawn fertilizer
- Laundry detergent
- Animal waste (geese, ducks)
- Pet waste
- Grass clippings
- Leaves
- Lawn soil
- Road de-icers
Phosphorus is an enemy of the lake. It feeds off of the growth of excessive algae. It creates large algae
blooms. Algae reduce lake clarity, and make it hard for other water plants to survive and – when they
decompose – deplete oxygen in the lakes’ deepest reaches. The result is a lake environment
that is especially hostile for deep-water fish. - Minnesota Fresh Water Society
Sediment (soil washed into the lake)
Bacterial from leaking septic systems or wet walls
Invasive weeds and animals:
- Contents from your aquarium - the fish won't survive and the plants are invasive
- Ducks or fish not native to our lake
- Pet snakes or alligators (yikes!)
Left over bait from fishing; minnows are especially harmful
Household cleaners
Automotive oil
Reminder! In the Fall, don't blow your leaves into the lake! If you have a lawn service, please let them know.
