Flag Burning Ceremony Continues

Dwight and Linda decided not to continue a couple of years ago.  But last year Bob and Georgia Evans decided to revive the lake tradition and host it on their island.  Dwight and Linda watched from their boat.

Dwight passed away on Oct. 23, 2021, but he will be remembered this year as Bob and Georgia continue to honor our flag on July 4th.  Details will follow in our spring issue, via our Lake Alerts and on our Facebook page.

What does it mean to retire a flag?
When an American flag is worn beyond repair so that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display it should be destroyed in a dignified way.

Who is authorized to retire a U.S. Flag?
The U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag should be destroyed in a dignified way preferably by burning.  The ceremony should be solemn and dignified.”

How can I get my old worn flag to Bob and Georgia for the ceremony?
Bring your flag to any Lake Association Board Member or to your Area Representative (Newsletter Delivery Person).  We’ll take it from there.

If you are new to the lake, the island is in the southeast corner of Little Simonton.  It’s shallow there.  Go slow

Access and Easements on Simonton Lake

On every one of Indiana’s public lakes, the question of access to the lake is an issue.  The land around Simonton Lake was platted at various times over the decades starting when the descendants of Samuel Simonton began creating lots for sale along the lake shore and ending when the lots along the channels were platted.
