Don't Blow Leaves In the Lake
Please don’t blow leaves in the lake. We know that leaves will naturally blow into the water. But purposely blowing leaves into the water is bad for the lake.
- Phosphorus and nitrogen are added to lakes by many natural sources, such as the decomposition of plant material and animal waste.
- Human activity, however, is often responsible for excessive phosphorus loading that contributes to blue-green algal blooms, overabundant weed growth, and a general decline in water quality.
- Major contributions of excess phosphorus come from sources such as septic system inputs, agricultural runoff, storm water drainage, lawn fertilizer applications, and improper disposal of grass clippings and tree leaves.
Owners of lake front property can significantly reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the lake by taking actions to protect the lake
