For many years a flag retirement ceremony has been held as part of the lake’s observance of the 4th of July.  For many years Dwight and Linda Bowser held a flag retirement ceremony on the 4th of July in their yard on the lake. Last year Bob and Georgia Evans decided to revive the lake tradition and host it on their island in Little Simonton Lake.  The event was called the Dwight Bowser Memorial Flag Retirement Ceremony.  The ceremony included an Honor Guard Salute, Taps and a missing man formation fly over by two WW II era planes.

This year Bob and Georgia have announced they will once again host the event.  It is scheduled for Sunday July 2, 2023, at 2:30 pm. on Evans Island on Little Simonton Lake. Bob hopes that the event will be bigger and better.  He hopes to have a bigger flyover, include the local Scout troop, and get more involvement from local vets or those in active service.

Also, this year and in the future a memorial recognition of deceased veterans will be made. If you have a family member or friend who lived on Simonton Lake and is a deceased veteran, please contact Bob at newsletter@simontonlakehoa.com and provide the following information

• Where the Veteran Served
