The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education.

The DNR functions under the authority of the Natural Resource Commission.  Included in the Commission’s functions are the adoptions of permanent rules, service (either directly or through an Administrative Law Judge) as the “ultimate authority” for appeals from DNR orders, the development of “nonrule policy documents” (general policy statements), and the employment of DNR property managers.

Indiana Conservation Officers

Indiana employs over 200 game wardens, officially known as conservation officers, who are tasked with enforcing the laws and regulations of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, including wildlife and environmental protection laws and boating and hunting regulations. They provide a law enforcement presence in Indiana’s 25 state parks, investigate cases of timber theft and groundwater contamination and provide public education and training in hunting and boating and other outdoor activities.
