Lily Creek to Be Cleaned Out

By Bob Evans

Lily Creek, located in the southwest shoreline of Little Simonton, is scheduled to be cleaned out from just south of the weir south to a spot south of County Road 4.

Lily Creek drains the lake and eventually joins the St. Joe River east of Johnson Street.  In 2016 a weir built to the height of the legal lake limit was placed across the mouth of the creek so that in times of drought, the lake does not continue to drain.  Right now, the lake level is two inches below the legal lake level.

The creek is prone to vegetation that clogs the waterway.  Because Lily Creek is considered a drainage ditch it comes under the guidance of the County Drainage Board.  It is that board’s job to see that all drainage ditches in the county are cleaned out.  After a year of working on the details, the project has been approved by the County and the bids have been awarded.  The work is scheduled to begin after the crops are harvested from the fields along the creek.  This should improve the water flow from the lake into the weir and down Lily Creek to St. Joseph
River.

Lily Creek is also known as “Osolo Township Ditch.”  That is how it is listed on this map.
